About: Milk producing tissue in the lactating breast is arranged in lobules. Each lobule contains many alveoli, which are groups of cells that produce milk. When a baby nurses, the nipple stimulation sends a message to the mother's brain to maintain an elevated level of the hormone prolactin. Prolactin instructs the glandular tissue to continue milk production. Oxytocin is the other hormone of lactation, which is triggered when the mother or lactating parent sees, hears, feels, smells, or thinks about the baby. Oxytocin is responsible for milk ejection from the breast. This artwork was created by applying a variety of image processing algorythms to a microscopic scan of breast tissue.

Artist Highlights

Demitri Ambrose or (DeeMill as she signs her artwork) is a professional artist currently residing in Carlsbad. With a Bachelors of Fine Arts she owns and operates a step by step art studio there. As well as paints murals around the community and teaches educational art classes.

Demitri always planned on breastfeeding her children and when her first child, a daughter, was born in 2019 she did just that but soon realized she was blessed with an over abundance of the liquid gold. Since she was such an over producer she was able to participate in mom to mom breastmilk sharing and fed 18 other babies besides her own all over the state of New Mexico.

Currently Demitri is pregnant with her second child, due the first week of November, and plans on feeding as many babies as she can again if blessed with the same lactation. Her piece in this exhibition is titled “Sharing the Wealth” for good reason.

I am Alicia Sosa-Provencio, an artist born and raised in New Mexico.  I am a graduate of The University of New Mexico, a former primary grade and art educator, and currently the stay-at-home parent of my 3 young boys while building my art business.  I am a passionate believer in the power of arts’ healing abilities. I am known for my series of Breastfeeding Virgen De Guadalupe paintings that portray Our Lady, my culture and my love for breastfeeding.  In each image she is cradling and feeding the infant Jesus.  After breastfeeding each of my boys for extended years this image danced in my head but I did not put paint to canvas until the summer of 2020. I currently sell my original acrylic paintings, art prints and greeting cards; all of bright colors in playful abstracts and cultural connections to my native New Mexico roots.

Coy Lowther

This piece depicts a place and moment that I can find when I close my eyes and recall my happiest experience with nourishing and bonding with my child. In reality, my eyes are open and I'm not comfortable feeding my child in public,  breast or bottle, for fear of judgement. My hope is that this piece can open eyes to the beauty and strength that come from nurturing your child and hopefully open minds and hearts to parents tasked with an impossible job who need as much support as possible.
